iLIKE UNVEILS “LOCAL CONCERTS” iPHONE APP AND RELEASES APPS BY MORE THAN 250 ARTISTS

Local Concerts app scans the music on any iPod Touch or iPhone and delivers notifications of nearby concerts by those artists.

More than 250 artists use iLike platform to launch their own iPhone apps

August 4, 2009 — Seattle, WA — iLike, the leading social music discovery service, today unveiled its new “Local Concerts” app, which provides personalized concert listings and notifications based on scanning the music on any iPod Touch or iPhone. iLike also announced unprecedented adoption of its recently launched iPhone app solution for artists. For a list of the top iLike artist apps, visit: www.iLike.com/mobile.

iLike’s Local Concerts app, already the top-ranking free concerts app in the iTunes App Store, lists upcoming shows in a user’s area and provides links to buy tickets. The new upgrade (available soon pending Apple approval) adds key features that leverage iPhone 3.0’s new capabilities:

  • Personalization: The app scans the music on an iPod or iPhone and provides custom concert listings to match.
  • Notifications: Users can opt to be notified whenever an artist in their music collection announces a local concert.
  • In-app Maps:  Maps to venues are displayed directly inside the app.
  • Social Hooks: Users can share concert information with friends via email without leaving within the app.

“Finding out about local concerts has never been easier,” said Ali Partovi, CEO of iLike. “This is one of the first apps that’s optimized not just for the iPhone but also for the iPod, because it customizes itself to your entire music collection.”

In the two months since iLike announced its iPhone Apps for Artists program, more than 250 artists from all genres of music have already launched iLike-powered iPhone apps.

“As an independent artist, I truly appreciate this direct connection that I now have to fans, whether I’m announcing new tour dates, releasing a new album, or just have something to say,” said singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson.

“We’re encouraged by the positive response our create-your-own-app platform has generated, and this is only the beginning,” said Ali Partovi, CEO of iLike. “We’re helping artists save time, make money, and remain in constant contact with fans.”

More about iLike iPhone Apps for Artists

In May 2009, iLike announced a turnkey system enabling any artist to create their own app featuring concert dates, video messages, photos, blogs, bulletins, games, and exclusive content. Bands can post content and messages to fans who install their app via the iLike Artist Dashboard, already in use by more than 300,000 artists.

The iLike iPhone app platform has been selected by established and emerging artists, from proudly independent musicians to major label acts, across a variety of musical genres. The list includes:

Brushfire Records (includes Jack Johnson and Mason Jennings)
Reba McEntire
DeVotchka
Official Album App for Sonic Youth’s The Eternal
Information Society
Ingrid Michaelson
The Cribs
Josh Turner
John Butler Trio
Jimmy Cliff
Rusted Root
Sara Evans
Swing Out Sister
Marillion
Tanya Tucker
Vertical Horizon

For artists, the benefits of using iLike to create a custom iPhone app include:

  • Ease-of-Use: Artists can create apps using a simple web-based wizard, and post new content at any time with the click of a button.
  • No Technology Headaches: iLike maintains a technology platform and team that supports artist apps, alleviating the need for an artist to hire programmers and designers whenever an update is needed.
  • Post Once, Publish Everywhere: Participating artists sync their presence on iLike, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and beyond, rather than posting redundant content multiple times.
  • Marketing: iLike promotes artist-created apps to its more than 50 million users, with 500,000 new users being added weekly.

In addition to artist iPhone apps, iLike’s “post once, publish everywhere” model helps artists reach their fans among more than 50 million music fans across the iLike network, including iLike’s leading music applications on iGoogle, Facebook, hi5, Bebo, Orkut, and iLike plugins for iTunes and Windows Media Player.

The Dead Weather’s Debut Album, "Horehound," Available Today As a Free Stream, Only on iLike

July 8, 2009 — Seattle, WA and Nashville, TN— Following on the successful heels of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, Jack White has now joined forces with Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs) and Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) to form a rock band called The Dead Weather. The band’s highly anticipated debut album, Horehound, is available to listen to in full and for free, exclusively on iLike (the leading social music discovery service) for the next 24 hours at www.iLike.com/thedeadweather

In advance of Horehound’s July 14th release, fans can experience the album for the first time today, exclusively on iLike. Horehound was produced by Jack White on his Third Man Records imprint and was the first record to ever be recorded at his new Nashville-based studio.

“I feel it, you feel it – we’re all struggling with the trouble that this industry is in right now,” said Jack White. “And it’s not about sales; it’s about beauty and romance and a relationship to art that’s turning invisible, and it’s affecting people’s perception of music. It’s affecting whether they think of it as a viable art, because it’s so disposable. It’s not about being modern or retro or a Luddite or being hopeful or pessimistic about the future; it’s about clinging on to what makes sense of our lives, and what gives our lives value, and what gives us a commonality and a feeling of belonging.”

About The Dead Weather
Jack White plays drums, produces and splits lead vocals with Alison Mosshart (The Kills) while Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) plays guitar and Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs) plays bass.

The impetus for The Dead Weather came when Alison Mosshart’s band The Kills opened on a few US tour dates for The Raconteurs. Jack White was given doctor’s orders to take it easy on the vocals, so he invited Alison to sing a few songs onstage. Immediately recognizing the musical synergy, the trio devised a plot to record together during some down time in White’s own Third Man Recording Studio in Nashville. White then enlisted the addition of erstwhile Raconteurs’ touring accomplice and Queens Of The Stone Age collaborator Dean Fertita. What was initially imagined as a one-off collaboration for a 7” single release turned into a full-length album once the quartet switched on the recording tape.

iLike will syndicate The Dead Weather’s album stream across iLike.com, iLike’s dominant Facebook® music app, plus other leading social networks and online platforms including the iLike Sidebar for iTunes (www.iLike.com/download). Some early praise for Horehound…

"...an excellent album of sex sweat, bourbon breath, gun smoke and guitar sleaze...these are all top-notch songs...what a lovely way to burn." 4 Stars - Rolling Stone

"...when you listen to clattery Horehound tracks like "So Far From Your Weapon" or "Treat Me Like Your Mother"...you imagine a sort of Tennessee Williams, kitchen-knife-wielding scenario, starring an unhinged Nick Cave and PJ Harvey circa "Henry Lee."" – Spin

“The 11 songs on the album…are spare and sexy, with the vocals often distorted or submerged beneath grinding, snaky rhythms.” – The New York Times

SONIC YOUTH WORLD PREMIERE THEIR NEW ALBUM ON iLIKE

Fans Invited to Play “The Sonic Youth Trickster Challenge” only on iLike

June 2, 2009 — Seattle, WA and New York, NY— Beginning today (June 2, 2009), rock pioneers Sonic Youth will world-premiere their not-yet-released album, The Eternal, exclusively on iLike, the leading social music discovery service. The exclusive, one-week iLike listening event will culminate with the June 9 retail release of The Eternal on Matador Records.

To celebrate the upcoming album release, “The Sonic Youth Trickster Challenge,” an interactive online game, also launched today -- only on iLike. Fans are invited to learn more and play at: www.iLike.com/trickster. All players will be granted access to exclusive rehearsal footage.

“This album is a celebration of newfound freedom,” said Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore. “Releasing this album with our friends at Matador feels like liberation which inspired us during the recording process. Debuting it on iLike, free from industry constraints, also fit this theme.”

Abandoning the standard routine of writing and rehearsing a cycle of songs in one time period, Sonic Youth changed tactics and would compose several tracks in one weekend and record them the following weekend. The twelve tracks that resulted from this new approach are a dynamic display of Sonic Youth touchstones: From the primal no wave attack of their earliest days, to the radical chording and song structures of the band’s 90s period, to the more focused and contemporary explorations of the last five years.

iLike will syndicate Sonic Youth’s album stream across iLike.com, iLike’s dominant Facebook® music app, plus other leading social networks and online platforms including the iLike Sidebar for iTunes (www.iLike.com/download). To learn more about iLike’s free content syndication tool for artists, go to: www.iLike.com/forartists.

“There’s enormous value in connecting artists directly with their fans, and with today’s announcements we’ve redefined the game,” said Ali Partovi, CEO of iLike. “In an increasingly fragmented media landscape, artists need to reach fans across a dizzying spectrum of social networks, web destinations, and mobile devices, and iLike gives them simple yet powerful tools to do it all from one place.”

"Twitter is helping people discover and share what's happening right now in all aspects of their lives," said Biz Stone, Co-founder of Twitter. Details of iLike’s New Features & Syndication Channels:
The new content syndication destinations announced today, described in detail at www.iLike.com/manage, include:

  • Twitter: Artists can now link their iLike and Twitter accounts, bringing their “tweets” to more fans via the iLike music feed, the artist’s iLike profile, and the artist’s page on Facebook. Likewise, when an artist posts a new song, video, or concert listing, iLike will notify fans via Twitter.
  • YouTube: Artists can now sync their YouTube channel and iLike account. Every video an artist posts to iLike will be automatically posted to their YouTube channel, and vice versa.

Artists can also configure their iLike Artist Dashboard so that any blog, bulletin, or video they post at iLike is also posted on their MySpace page.
  • Facebook Pages “Music” Tab: Artists can now add the Music tab to their Page on Facebook. The Music tab, by iLike, features the artist’s songs, concerts, videos, bulletins, blogs, and tweets.
  • Artist dot-com Websites: The iLike Artist Dashboard now allows artists to manage the content on their own official dot-com websites via embeddable javaScript widgets.
  • Ticketmaster: Songs, photos, and videos posted to the iLike Dashboard will also appear on the artist’s page on Ticketmaster.

PLATINUM-SELLING RECORDING ARTIST GAVIN DEGRAW’S HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED ALBUM AVAILABLE TO LISTEN TO IN FULL ONLY ON iLIKE

March 30, 2009 — Seattle, WA and New York, NY — Beginning today (March 30, 2009), platinum-selling recording artist Gavin DeGraw will world-premiere his not-yet-released album, FREE, exclusively on iLike, the leading social music discovery service. The exclusive iLike listening event will culminate with the retail release of FREE on March 31, 2009.

“My intention on FREE was to stay out of the way of the songs,” said Gavin DeGraw. “We kept the production very minimal in order to get everything that lies between me and the audience out of the way. By removing all the bells and whistles, you really make room for someone to pay attention to the songwriting. Likewise, through iLike I’m bringing my new album directly to fans in an intimate way -- with no middlemen or editorializing.”

“Gavin DeGraw is one of the most magnetic voices in popular music,” said Ali Partovi, CEO of iLike. “I’m delighted to support Gavin’s vision of connecting directly with his legions of fans.”

FREE, DeGraw’s stripped-down 9-track collection of songs, is the follow-up to his self-titled 2008 Top 10 album. “It isn’t about the biggest, the strongest, or the loudest,” said DeGraw. “It’s about simplicity in its purest form. FREE doesn’t sound like the big machine. It sounds like where you go to escape the big machine.” In keeping with this intimate approach, DeGraw will hit the road on March 27, 2009 for an extensive spring tour he has dubbed his “Where It Began” tour, in which audiences will be taken on a musical journey back to DeGraw’s roots for a series of intimate full band and solo performances. “We’ll take a similar approach to the live shows as we did on the album and with the iLike album premiere,” he says. “This tour is all about creating that very close connection with the audience.”

iLike will syndicate DeGraw’s album stream across iLike.com, iLike’s dominant Facebook music app, and other leading social networks and online platforms including the iLike Sidebar for iTunes (www.iLike.com/download).
